Chemistry: 5 things you should know

Do you have to decide on a career and still don’t know which one? Do you like something different every day? Don’t know what you want to study? If at some point studying Chemistry has crossed your mind, this may interest you Chemistry WordPress Blog. David, who is already studying this degree, tells you the 5 things you should know about this degree.

What is it about?
“There are quite a few differences between the different courses. The first course would be equivalent to a third year of high school, because they give us basic notions of physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology…, a little so that we are all at the same level. In higher courses they try to train you in all areas of chemistry, which are mainly four: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry and physical chemistry . You have different subjects that introduce you to these areas and other more complementary ones, such as Statistics, Biochemistry … At my university, you cannot take electives until the fourth year , which is when you specialize and when you do internships.

Why did you decide to choose it?
“The truth is that, like almost everyone, in the second year of high school I wasn’t sure about it (in fact, I had thought about doing Computer Engineering), but in high school what I liked was messing around in the laboratory and I was good at chemistry. good. You have to be interested in the scientific world , to see where things come from and want to learn new things.”

What is it you like the most of her? And the least?
“I believe that almost everyone agrees on this; For me, the most beautiful thing about the degree are the laboratories , because it is where you play, where you are with your classmates and there is good vibes and where you apply the knowledge you have learned. Seeing a reaction on paper is not the same as seeing it happen. Yes, it is true that the laboratories have the part of reports that you have to write that is a little more tedious. For me, the worst thing is that you can’t choose specialties until fourth grade and you have to train in all branches, so if you don’t like one (in my case, physical chemistry), you have to put up with it until the last year.

What outputs does it have?
“Chemistry is a very nice career because it has a very wide range of opportunities. You can do research or go to work in private industry (in summary, in R&D, in product development, in quality control…). Every company has a quality control section , which is in charge of a chemist specialized in analytics. There is also another branch which is teaching ; After your degree you can do a master’s degree and take Physics and Chemistry at ESO.”

Is it necessary to do studies after finishing the degree (master’s, postgraduate…)?
“Unfortunately, almost everyone has to get a master’s degree. However, there is a lot of variety. The master’s degree is to specialize in the branch of chemistry that you liked. If, on the other hand, you wanted to be a teacher, you would have to do the Master’s Degree in Teaching .”

Now that you know the Chemistry career a little better, you are surely closer to discovering if it is your ideal career . If you’re not convinced, don’t worry, there are as many options as you can imagine.
